“It feels like someone is repeatedly punching me in my abdomen.”

“It’s worse than back when I sprained my ankle.”

“I feel like someone just stabbed me in the stomach.”

These are just some of the ways I have heard women describe their period pains.

Menstruation is a natural biological occurrence that starts in women during puberty. Most women complain about going through menstrual cramps, on top of the usual discomfort and sore muscles. The symptoms of discomfort and pain may vary from individual to individual, but cramps are very common. However, the intensity of it may still vary. A lot of women take over the counter pain killers, as prescribed by their gynaecologists to fight this pain. However, many women shy away from taking pain killers every month due to their dependency. Then, how does one deal with it?

First, let’s take a look at why we get cramps during periods.

 What are period cramps?

Period pains can be caused by medical reasons like PCOD, endometriosis, fibroids, PCOS, etc. Apart from this, period cramps occur when the uterus contracts to help expel its lining. The pain is due to the uterine muscle contractions and hence, they can feel very numbing and unbearable. The easy and effective method to get instant relief from cramps can be pain killers. However, as mentioned before, pain killers come with their own side effects and the user might not feel comfortable taking them every month.

The good news is, that you can relieve yourself from period cramps using natural, home-remedies as well. These methods are not only effective but also come with no side effects. Here are some tips and tricks to make your period days easier –

  • Applying Heat – This is a very well known and commonly used method. Applying heat to your abdomen and lower back can help reduce the pain and relax your muscles. So, keep a hot water bag or heat pads ready for your next cycle.

  • Make healthier choices – Another well known trick is to avoid certain food and beverages a little before and during your periods. Believe it or not, what you eat can directly affect your period cramps. Caffeine, alcohol and fatty foods can worsen your period cramps. Hence, it is important to make some healthy food choices and adjust your diet. Replace your coke can with some hot ginger tea, and curb your candy cravings by eating some fresh fruits.

  • Exercise – The idea of moving around during periods might not sound appealing at all. However, doing some light exercises and stretches can work wonders for your terrible cramps. Moderate activities like walking and Yoga stretches can make you feel a lot better.

  • Massage with essential oils – A gentle massage for about 15 – 20 minutes with essential oils can help reduce the tension in the muscles and lessen the cramps.

  • Get proper rest – We know life doesn’t stop for periods, and women have to carry out their daily activities despite the pain and discomfort. However, it is very important to allow your body and mind to rest and get proper sleep. A good night’s sleep for around eight hours can help reduce the dreadful period cramps.

These were just some of the many natural methods to help reduce the evil period cramps. However, in case of a medical condition like Endometriosis, Fibroids, PCOD or PCOS, please consult your gynaecologist to know what works the best for you.

We hope you try out these simple and effective methods during your next cycle and get rid of the dreadful cramps.
