Have you ever thought about trying meditation, but just never understood how to get started? Don’t let that dishearten you and take you away from the practice. The art of meditation itself is a hard practice to get into and with a little time, you will hang off it.

Now let’s delve into the basics:

What is mediation?

‘Meditation is an ancient wellness practice that focuses on training awareness, attention, and compassion.’ The practice originated in the Asian countries of India, China, and Japan. But now it's recognized and practiced all over the world. The reason behind this sudden growth of the practice is the change in lifestyles.

We now live very fast-paced lives, where one easily gets stressed and overwhelmed. The practice of meditation helps you draw your focus back and help you manage your stress and concentration levels.

What you should know about meditation:

Though the process of meditation seems straightforward, it’s a little difficult to get into in the beginning. Many find it strange to sit in silence with their innermost thoughts. The funny thing is the mind has this tendency to resist this process. But don’t let that discourage you from practicing. It might be frustrating initially, but soon you will get the hang of sitting through a whole ten minutes, and as time passes you will be able to sit for a longer period without even realizing what you are doing.

What are the important things to keep in mind?

One should always keep your goal for meditation in mind. Your goals can be as basic as improving your focus and concentration levels to improving your relationship with someone. The practice of meditation is for awareness; therefore, it is said that the practice can help you generate awareness in any aspect of life.

How do you meditate?

There are four simple steps in the practice of meditation:

1. Find a quiet place to sit in. You need to find a comfortable space in any part of your home, but you must keep in mind that nothing in your surroundings should distract you while you are practicing.

2. Sit in a comfortable position. You should sit in a position you’re comfortable in. You don’t necessarily need to sit on the floor, you can use a chair or even use a cushion. The most important thing to keep in mind is that your body should not be tense.

3. Focus on your breathing. Your breathing should be your anchor. Remember to breathe slowly while focusing on every part of your body. Embrace the sensation your body feels from your toes to head.

4. It’s okay to get distracted. Distractions are an inevitable part of meditation. But what important is your ability to get back to the practice despite whatever distraction you face?

What does the practice help you achieve?

The practice helps you with the following:

1. Improves self-awareness

2. Increases your focus and concentration

3. Reduces your stress

4. Helps battle addictions

5. Helps manage anxiety and depression

6. Helps control pain

The above is a beginner's guide to meditation. The most important thing about meditation is, that you should never give up. There will be many distractions that come your way, but there is a reason you chose to start the practice, so you should make sure you stick with it. For a beginner 10 minutes, a day is enough. Remember a self-aware individual is one who functions best! You can also use guided meditation apps if you need that push!
